چکیده

Cyanobacteria are considered to be a potential source of novel bioactive compounds that are highly intriguing from biotechnological perspective. A number of bioactive compounds such as cyanotoxins, mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), scytonemin, phycobiliproteins (PBPs), phytohormones etc. have been reported from diverse group of cyanobacteria that show assorted biological activities ranging from antioxidants, antibiotics, anticancer, antiviral to antiinflamatory action. The synthesis of UV-absorbing/screening compounds (MAAs) as well as phycobiliproteins (PBPs) from cyanobacteria is of particular interest as promising biomolecules that may be biotechnologically exploited in various pharmaceutical industries with significant biomedical research. The accessory light-harvesting pigments, PBPs are hepatoprotective, neuroprotective and can act as fluorescent neoglycoproteins probe. It can also serve as natural colorants in food and cosmetics industries. MAAs has been shown to play a significant role in skin protection from UV-B-irradiation and hence, can be a suitable candidate in the cosmetic industries for the development of natural UV sunscreens. The present review discusses biotechnological potential of MAAs as well as PBPs from cyanobacteria.

Mycosporine-Like Amino Acids: Potential Health and Beauty Ingredients

Human skin is constantly exposed to damaging ultraviolet radiation (UVR), which induces a number of acute and chronic disorders. To reduce the risk of UV-induced skin injury, people apply an additional external protection in the form of cosmetic products containing sunscreens. Nowadays, because of the use of some chemical filters raises a lot of controversies, research focuses on exploring nove...

Proteins and Carbohydrates from Red Seaweeds: Evidence for Beneficial Effects on Gut Function and Microbiota

Based on their composition, marine algae, and namely red seaweeds, are good potential functional foods. Intestinal mucosal barrier function refers to the capacity of the intestine to provide adequate containment of luminal microorganisms and molecules. Here, we will first outline the component of seaweeds and will summarize the effects of these on the regulation of mucosal barrier function. Spe...

Quantitative analysis of mycosporine-like amino acids in marine algae by capillary electrophoresis with diode-array detection

Marine species have evolved a variety of physical or chemical strategies to diminish damage from elevated environmental ultraviolet radiation. Mycosporine-like amino acids, a group of widely distributed small water soluble compounds, are biologically relevant because of their photo-protective potential. In addition, presumed antioxidant and skin protective strategies raise the interest for poss...

Sources of mycosporine-like amino acids in planktonic Chlorella-bearing ciliates (Ciliophora)

1. Mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) are a family of secondary metabolites known to protect organisms exposed to solar UV radiation. We tested their distribution among several planktonic ciliates bearing Chlorella isolated from an oligo-mesotrophic lake in Tyrol, Austria. In order to test the origin of these compounds, the MAAs were assessed by high performance liquid chromatography in both t...

Analysis of proteins involved in the production of MAA׳s in two Cyanobacteria Synechocystis PCC 6803 and Anabaena cylindrica

Mycosporine- like amino acids (MAAs) are small (<400Da), colourless, water soluble compounds composed of cyclohexenone or cyclohexinimine chromophere conjugated with the nitrogen substituent of amino acid or its amino alcohol. These compounds are known for their UV- absorbing role in various organisms and seem to have evolutionary significance. The biosynthesis of MAAs is presumed to occur via ...
